Stories

SŌNSŌN collective (started as Phường Son) was founded in 2020 by 3 Vietnamese woman - sharing mutual practices in visual arts and design in relation to sustainablity and ecology.

Aspired for a space for one's inner-outer balance, SŌNSŌN conceived Stillness Corner. This spatial concept expands the boundary between art and design, calling one to return to the present moment by treasuring the notion time, space and object. Stillness Corner is modular and can be adapted to various settings and contexts - an aspect we continue to develop as it grows.

At Vietnam Design Week 2020, Stillness Corner earned First Prize and Voters’ Choice. This motivated us to create our homeware brand SŌNSŌN to share a more harmonious way of living to more people. SŌNSŌN’s products are consistently and mainly hand-crafted, from their conception and prototype-making to completion. This helps us preserve the distinctive “naivety” in what we call the quintessential Vietnamese trait.

In the future, SŌNSŌN collective wishes to pursue more exciting artistic projects while SŌNSŌN seeks to bring more memorable designs to life, exploring the harmonious trinity of Human - Nature - Spirituality.

Actually we are a bit "lazy"...

German thinker and philosopher Karl Marx once wrote: "In communist society, no one has a monopoly on any field of activity, but each person can succeed in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus creates conditions for me to be able to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, tend cattle in the evening, criticize after dinner, and only as I happen to be in the mood to do it without ever having to become a hunter, a fisherman, a shepherd or a critic."

Collective SŌNSŌN was established according to the design - production - interaction cooperative model since August 2020, where each person can be both an idea-giver and an artist, when building an altar, doing horoscopes, coordinating events, doing research, writing poetry and literature.

The cooperative does not set a limit for any concept, and always revisits prejudices and defaults in society, asking counter-questions to create combinations between modern life and traditional elements, between the individual and the collective, between private spiritual space and common activities. And because of such flexibility and freedom, we are a bit "lazy", only waiting for deadlines to be met and creating our own projects to put pressure on our own survival.
